Full Froth, No Ego: Busting the Biggest Spearfishing Myths with Isaac Shrek Daly of Noob Spearo

Full Froth, No Ego: Busting the Biggest Spearfishing Myths with Isaac Shrek Daly of Noob Spearo

To the untrained eye, spearfishing can look incredibly intense - even controversial. Some perceive it as a reckless, chaotic free-for-all beneath the waves. But the truth is, when practiced with proper training, spearfishing is actually one of the most highly informed, intentional, and sustainable ways to harvest. It’s not about slaughtering aimlessly; it’s about deep ecological awareness, selective hunting, and a profound respect for the marine ecosystem.

Have you ever looked out at spearfishers and thought, “There’s no way I could do that. I can’t hold my breath, the sharks will eat me, and isn't it bad for the ocean anyway?”

You aren't alone. For many people, spearfishing seems like an elite, mysterious club reserved exclusively for superhuman freedivers and fearless daredevils. But according to Isaac "Shrek" Daly, founder of Noob Spearo, that couldn't be further from the truth.

Through Noob Spearo’s massive podcast, targeted courses, and thriving community, Shrek has helped thousands of divers skip years of grueling trial and error to start spearfishing strategically and ethically. The secret? Adopting a philosophy he calls "Full Froth, No Ego."

"Ego gets in the way of learning and safety in this sport," Isaac warns. "A good attitude—that pure froth and excitement—is what gets people through the setbacks. If you want to dive smarter, you have to leave your ego at the shore."

To make the underwater world accessible to everyone, Isaac is here to bust the two biggest myths holding aspiring spearos back.

Myth 1: “My breath-hold is terrible—there's no way I can spearfish.”

The Reality: You don’t need a superpower; you just need to understand your body.

A common roadblock for beginners is a lack of confidence in themselves. "People tell me, 'My breath-hold is terrible, maybe 30 seconds at best. There's no way I could spearfish to 10 meters,'" Isaac says.

But according to the Noob Spearo crew, your starting point doesn't dictate your potential. With a bit of training over just one long weekend, everyday people consistently walk away with a 2-minute-plus breath-hold after starting at just 30 seconds.

"It’s not a magic technique," Shrek explains. "It’s learning to relax, listening to your body, understanding the physiology of how it works under pressure, and getting a bit of coaching. Our goal isn't to look like heroes—our goal is to make you the hero of your own story."

Myth 2: “Sharks are everywhere, and spearfishing is pure lunacy.”

The Reality: 99% of shark interactions are positive and fulfilling.

Let’s face it. Sharks are the elephant in the water. But the Hollywood-style terror surrounding them is highly exaggerated.

"Look, it's not entirely untrue - sharks are everywhere," Isaac admits. "But the real truth is that 99% of our interactions with them are positive, amazing, and deeply fulfilling. They are majestic, apex predators that are incredible to witness."

Rather than avoiding the water out of fear, Noob Spearo focuses on structured safety, gentle exposure, and understanding shark behavior. "With a bit of training, you’ll stop seeing them as movie monsters. Instead, you’ll see exactly what the rest of us frothing-mad ocean lovers see: a beautiful, balanced ecosystem."

The Origin: Built From "The Blind Leading the Blind"

Isaac’s passion for fast-tracking the learning curve comes from personal experience. Growing up in New Zealand, he did everything he could in the water—swimming, fishing, lifesaving, and diving. It wasn't until his Master Scuba Diver Instructor course that he realized his true calling wasn’t strapped to a scuba tank; it was freedive spearfishing.

When he started seriously spearfishing in Queensland in his late 20s, he hit a massive wall.

"My mate, who I affectionately dubbed 'Sea Sick Mike,' and I were the proverbial blind leading the blind," Shrek laughs. "We had no formal training, didn't know anyone else who did it or would talk to us, used rudimentary gear, didn't really know the marine species, and definitely didn't have a boat. It was a steep, expensive learning curve to figure out on our own."

That frustrating, isolated start became the catalyst for Noob Spearo. Isaac vowed to build the resource he never had, creating an educational pathway so future divers wouldn't have to suffer through the same mistakes.
