By serving as a dedicated surface assistant, you help ensure smooth logistics, maximum comfort, and total safety for physically disabled divers during their aquatic adventures.
What You Will Learn & Practice
- Adaptive Equipment Management: Learn how to assemble, position, and handle specialized scuba and snorkeling gear tailored for divers with limited mobility.
- Transfers & Mobility Assistance: Master safe, respectful, and physically sound transfer techniques from wheelchairs, vehicles, and boat decks into and out of the water.
- Pre- and Post-Dive Care: Assist divers with gearing up, donning wetsuits, performing pre-dive equipment checks, and managing post-dive thermal care and dry-off procedures.
- Emergency Action Protocols: Understand surface safety procedures, communication channels, and emergency assistance techniques specific to adaptive dive operations.

Itinerary
- Phase 1: Classroom Theory & Disability Awareness
- Morning: Classroom workshop covering various physical disabilities, mobility considerations, legal/safety responsibilities, and effective communication strategies.
- Learn proper lifting mechanics, equipment preparation tailored to disabled divers, and surface emergency action plans.
- Phase 2: Land & Boat Transfer Workshops
- Afternoon: Practical practice on shore and dock facilities. Master surface transfers (wheelchair to boat, dock to waterline), equipment assembly for adaptive divers, and pre-dive donning/doffing assistance.
- Phase 3: Surface Water Operations & Scenario Evaluation
- Day 2: Practical surface exercises at the pool or shore entry point.
- Practice surface assistance techniques, line handling, managing entries and exits in mild sea conditions, and executing surface rescue and recovery procedures.
- Complete final debriefing, logbook verification, and process your official Scubility Surface Buddy certification.
