This six-night liveaboard sails from Thap Lamu in Khao Lak through the Similan and Surin Islands national parks in the Andaman Sea. The route links the granite boulder reefs of the Similans with the manta hotspots of Koh Bon and Koh Tachai, then heads north to the Surin Islands and Richelieu Rock, with around 19 dives over the week.
Fin through swim-throughs between house-sized granite boulders while leopard sharks rest on the sand below. Drift along the West Ridge at Koh Bon watching for a manta sweeping in from the blue, then search the soft corals of Richelieu Rock for seahorses, anemonefish and pharaoh cuttlefish, keeping one eye on the blue for a passing whale shark. Night dives bring out octopus and hunting morays, and most days end with a sunset dive.
Trip Highlights & Key Regional Features
- Richelieu Rock: a horseshoe-shaped pinnacle east of the Surins, smothered in soft coral, with seahorses, pharaoh cuttlefish, octopus and the chance of a whale shark. Sheltered corners make it workable even when the current runs.
- Koh Bon: the best manta site on the route. The West Ridge drift passes Napoleon wrasse and giant morays.
- Koh Tachai: Twin Peaks pinnacle draws turtles and barracuda, with mantas and whale sharks most likely from late January to April.
- Similan Islands: Elephant Head Rock, Boulder City, Christmas Point and Deep Six, with swim-throughs, leopard sharks, whitetip reef sharks and giant trevally.
- Surin Islands: Torinla Pinnacle, Hin Kong and Turtle Ledges, rich in hard coral and far quieter than the Similans.
- Khao Lak wrecks: Boonsung and Premchai in about 18 m, covered in nudibranchs and shrimp, when time and conditions allow.
- Visibility and water: often 20 to 40 m, sometimes up to 50 m, in 28 to 30 °C water.
