This 10-night Philippines liveaboard leaves from Mactan, next to Cebu, and covers the central Visayas, Southern Leyte and Malapascua in a single trip. The usual dive areas are Sogod Bay and the Napantao Fish Sanctuary, Limasawa Island, Balicasag, the Bohol and Cabilao walls, and the Malapascua area with Gato Island and Kimud Shoal. The exact order changes with weather, tides and currents.
Two kinds of diving share the same week. Some dives are slow and close up: a six-metre pier, a dark sand slope at sunset, an hour spent finding a frogfish, a mandarin fish or a pygmy seahorse. Others are open and steep, with walls dropping past 40 metres, turtles grazing on seagrass and schools of jacks and barracuda moving along the edge. Alternating them keeps the days varied, and the sunset or night dive is when the muck sites are at their best.
Trip Highlights & Key Regional Features
- Kimud Shoal near Malapascua: thresher sharks visit regularly to be cleaned. Hammerheads are rare, between December and May.
- Gato Island: a 22 metre deep, 30 metre long tunnel through the rock where whitetip reef sharks often rest, plus sea kraits.
- Napantao Fish Sanctuary in Sogod Bay: protected since 1996, with a wall to about 50 metres, hawksbill turtles, giant frogfish and whitetips.
- Whale sharks off Pintuyan and Liloan in season: snorkelling only, as scuba diving is not allowed at whale shark sites.
- Muck diving at Santa Paz Sanctuary and Padre Burgos Pier: ghost pipefish, hairy frogfish, mimic and wunderpus octopus, and mandarin fish at sunset.
- Balicasag: turtles at Divers Heaven and the Black Forest drift (two dives a day allowed by permit).
- Bohol and Cabilao walls: Coco White, Snappers Cave and Gorgonian Wall, with pygmy seahorses in the sea fans.
- Limasawa Island: Gunter's Wall and Adrian's Cove, and an optional visit to the site of the first Catholic Mass in the Philippines.
- Up to 32 dives, with up to 4 dives a day.
