Diving in the Algarve is an experience of two worlds: the wild, rugged Atlantic and the vibrant, temperate Mediterranean. Because it sits at the intersection of these two bodies of water, the diving here is uniquely varied.

Unlike the tropical waters of the Maldives or the Caribbean, the Algarve is Atlantic-based. This means the water is refreshing and requires a bit more neoprene.

The Algarve’s coastline is famous for its golden limestone cliffs, and this topography continues underwater.

• The Grottoes: Especially around Lagos, you can expect "swim-throughs"—natural tunnels and arches where sunlight filters through cracks in the ceiling, creating cathedral-like light beams.
• The Artificial Reefs: The Ocean Revival Park in Portimão is the crown jewel. These four Navy ships weren't just "sunk"; they were prepared for divers. Expect wide corridors, safe penetration points, and massive gun turrets that are now home to schools of fish.
• The Wild West: In Sagres, the diving is deeper and more exposed. You’ll find massive boulders the size of houses and deep fissures filled with life.

The Algarve acts as a "nursery" for many species. While you might not see the massive whale sharks of the tropics, the biodiversity is incredible:

• The "Resident" Stars: Octopus and Cuttlefish are everywhere. You’ll see them camouflaging against the rocks or "dancing" during mating season.
• Macro Magic: For photographers, the Algarve is a paradise for Nudibranchs (sea slugs) in neon purples and oranges, as well as Seahorses in the sheltered seagrass beds of the Ria Formosa.
• The Big Schools: Expect clouds of Sea Bream, Boops, and Triggerfish. On deeper wrecks, you’ll find massive Conger Eels and Morays peeking out from the rusted iron.
• Pelagic Surprises: If you're lucky, especially in Sagres or further offshore, you might encounter Blue Sharks, Sunfish (Mola Mola), or even pods of Dolphins during your boat transit.
