This Humpback Whale Tonga Trip is an absolute bucket list 6-day all-inclusive diving holiday with 4 full days on the water during the most inquisitive and playful time of year.

Soak up a week of bliss on the remote island of Eua with endless days of whale encounters and beach fires and sunsets best described as out-of-this-world. Our quaint village of Tufivia is surrounded by luscious rainforests, spectacular caves and breathtaking cliff-tops views.

Freediving trips like this offer incredibly special whale encounters for snorkellers and freedivers. Tonga humpback whales are like the puppies of the sea, curiously playful sometimes spending an hour or more with us singing their songs.

This will be an intimate group expedition for maximum enjoyment and wonderfully peaceful experiences for us and the whales. At this time of year, we expect dreamy tropical weather of 29°C (84°F) in the day and cooler evening temperatures with visibility of 30m+ (98ft).

Eua is the closest island to the Tonga Trench; a deep oceanic trench lapping with warm, safe, tropical waters where Humpback whales breed and birth their calves. We are the only boat operating in this area and our trips are guided by a local Captain, a marine biologist and your expert freediving instructors.

Itinerary

Day 1, Monday – Arrival + Optional Reef Dive
Arrive on the wild and wonderful island of ‘Eua and settle into our private beachfront retreat. Once you're checked in, enjoy an optional fun dive on the house reef — home to vibrant corals, over 1,500 species of fish, and the occasional visiting whale.

Day 2, Tuesday – First Whale Swim
We hit the water for our first full day with the whales. Expect intimate encounters, awe-inspiring breaches, and the magic of whale song echoing through the deep. Return to the resort for sunset and a gourmet three-course dinner.

Day 3, Wednesday – Full Day at Sea
Another full day on the boat gives you time to deepen your connection with these gentle giants. Whether it’s a mother and calf, or a solo adult cruising by, no two swims are ever the same.

Day 4, Thursday – Back to the Whales
We head back out to sea for another full day on the water. You might find the whales more curious after a day’s break — sometimes they linger longer, interact more, and come even closer.

Day 5, Friday – Final Full Day with the Whales
Our final full-day encounter with Tonga’s humpbacks. By now, you’ll be moving with ease in the water and soaking up the energy of each close-up moment.

Day 6, Saturday – Morning Swim + Departure
We’ll make the most of our final hours with a morning boat session. Then it's time to farewell Eua and flyonwards. (We recommend booking flights to depart the day after your trip concludes

Our Tonga Freediving Trips don't require freediving experience however, you must be a confident and experienced snorkeller. We'll provide basic Freediving training to help maximise your comfort, skills and breath-holds. Freediving courses aren't available during this trip as we'll be too busy hanging out with whales!

Accommodation: we have shared rooms and private couples rooms available. We'll coordinate your preferences upon booking.

Travel: bring your own travel insurance and flights to Tonga. We will all need to leave the resort on the final day, flying from 2pm.

Wi-Fi is available at the resort however, it's not the most reliable. You can purchase a local sim card if you must.

Cancellations

Life happens so we keep cancellations simple. Enjoy free cancellation for 14 days from the time of booking or find an equally qualified suitable replacement up to 30 days prior to diving.

Supportive environment and helpful instructors

I recently did some pool training sessions with Freediving Central! The instructors were very helpful, patient, and explained everything clearly. They created a really supportive and safe environment, which made learning and practicing so much easier. It was a group session and they made sure everyone, regardless of experiences, felt comfortable and well taken care of. I’d definitely recommend this
to anyone interested in freediving :)

Awesome and challenging pool training sessions

Freediving Central training pool sessions are awesome! We started with some breathing exercises and then moved into the pool work. It was challenging enough to really test your skills and make the training feel totally worth it. The session was well prepared, and Dan was amazing!

Amazing level one freediving experience

I recently completed my Level 1 Freediving course with Freediving Central, and it was an absolutely amazing experience! The whole team is super friendly, patient, and genuinely passionate about teaching. They really take the time to help you understand the techniques - especially with equalisation, which I struggled with at first. The instructors guided me through every step, offering personal tips and encouragement that made a huge difference. The course itself was not only educational but also a pure joy to do.
